Medication/First Aid

First Aid

Simple first aid is given at school when necessary. If an accident needs hospital attention we will make every effort to contact you first. Please ensure information from you is up-to-date so that you can be contacted. There are 7 Paediatric first-aiders in school and 6 first aiders for the work place.

Medicines

It is sometimes necessary for children to receive medication during their school day; therefore we have 5 members of staff who are qualified to Administer Medication. South Hylton Primary Academy will only accept medication in a clearly labelled container as originally dispensed and with the following information:-

  • Pupils name
  • Name of Medication
  • Dosage
  • Frequency of administration
  • Date of dispensing
  • Storage requirements
  • Expiry Date

The medication must be signed into the school office and a Medicine Consent form completed, please allow yourself adequate time to complete this form as we know how busy the morning ‘drop off’ can be. Your child’s medicine will not be accepted, under any circumstances, if it does not meet the dispensed criteria or completed Medicine Consent form.

Specific Medical Care Plans

Some children may have a specific medical condition which requires our specially trained staff to carry out treatment in the event of an emergency.

Examples of illnesses or conditions that may require a specific Medical care Plan are as follows:

  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Severe Allergies

An Individual Care Plan will be put into place working in conjunction with parents/carers and relevant professionals.

The care plan will include:

  • Action plan for administration of medication
  • Correctly Labelled Medication  - this will be checked routinely to ensure it is in-date
  • Container for child’s medication with photograph of child attached and clearly named
